I’ve been reflecting on how we’ve been navigating through the current circumstances of the past year and felt prompted to ask—how do we prepare for uncertainty?
Overwhelm, panic, and frustration are just some feelings that follow moments and periods of uncertainty when life doesn’t go as planned. However, it’s also possible to maintain composure and remain calm in the event that life takes a downward spin.
How do you currently find yourself responding to what’s taking place in the world around you? Has your outlook changed in any way since the past year?
Although there’s no right or wrong way to respond to unplanned events, there are things we can do to cope and take hold of the areas that are within our control whenever we get thrust into the non-linear dynamics of life.
While it’s always great to plan for the future and even desire structure, it’s also important to be prepared if things don’t go accordingly. That doesn’t mean living haphazardly but understanding that at times life may take an unexpected turn and our scales may tip off balance. Assurance comes when we know we have an effective strategy to keep us grounded.
If you’re looking for a place to start, I’ve listed 3 strategies you can use to help equip you for the unexpected:
1. Identify the skills and coping strategies you already have that can be applied to the current situation you are facing. Are you great at being present? Do you take the time to process what you’re feeling? These are just a few strategies you can apply when faced with unplanned events.
2. Take inventory of your thoughts and emotions. Our emotions are real, and so, the emotion is not the problem, it’s how we deal with the emotions we are facing. Without control, our emotions can create an additional ripple effect to what we’re already experiencing.
3. Assess your options. Is there anything you can do to address the situation? Are there any resources or supports you can access to help you process or resolve what you’re going through? Use them to your advantage.
